We provide everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible. You will find plenty of great local walks and 11 acres of our own private land with stream and great Devon-shire rolling countryside.
If your dog goes home exhausted, then we feel our job is done.
Dog Friendly Holidays
We have tried to make our cottage, campsite and our land as dog friendly as possible. We have created area's where your dog can explore and sniff. They can have a paddle in the stream whilst walking through our Babbling brook walk. Walk up through Calves field then in to our large dog exercise paddock (B) where dogs can run around off lead, here you will also find our own fun gundog scurry that you are welcome to use, there are straw bales to jump and a brush scurry to hide your dummy for your dogs to sniff out and retrieve. (this field is fenced but we recommend you assess the fencing yourself before letting your dog off lead). Views from this field are stunning and on a sunny day you can see the peaks of Exmoor lite up by the sun.
Straw bale scurry
Tried and tested by our Springer Spaniel Maizy. The scurry consists of six straw bales with fencing on both sides. Hold your dog while your partner places the dummy at the far end, then release your dog asking them to fetch and retrieve.
Hopping over the bales they will dash to retrieve the dummy/toy and hopefully return to you for their next go.
Bales are one high making it easy to jump up and off.
You have free use of our straw bale scurry.
Lucky our collie/x also loves the scurry, but agility is more her thing as she likes to do everything at 100 miles an hour. She actually makes a great retriever but her scent work is not that good, unlike her sister the springer spaniel.
Dogs can have a paddle in the stream whilst walking through our Babbling brook walk. On a hot day this is the perfect place for dogs to cool off.
It is nice and shady under the historic trees, the stream is fed from a spring and runs all year, although a little slower during the summer month, it's amazingly clear and cool in the summer. This is actually a very peaceful and tranquil spot, just the sound of a passing vehicle every now and again.
Dog Agility Equipment
Enclosed dog agility area (A on map) - This used to be a horse sand school, but has now been turned into our enclosed dog agility area. You can hire the agility area for as long as you need it, 1 hour or use it everyday of your whole stay. The ground is made up from sand and rubber which makes it very soft under foot for your dog, this makes play a lot safer for you and your dog. The agility can also be used all year round as the ground will not get muddy during winter months. This area is fenced with 4 feet high stock proof fencing with small spacing making it pretty much impossible for even a small dog to get through. It has been tried and tested by our collie and she cannot jump the 4 foot high fencing. This area is ideal for off lead doggy fun. Within this area you will find our dog agility equipment, you are welcome to use our agility equipment, but this is by arrangement only (a charge applies). If you are new to agility and would like to give it a try, we can assist you and your dog.
Fenced off lead Dog Exercise area
This is approx 3 acres of off lead doggy fun (B on the map). The exercise paddock is fenced with 3 feet stock proof fencing (4 feet in places). Within this field you will find our fun dog activities and a picnic table so you can sit and watch your dog(s) having fun running around playing. Sit and enjoy the Exmoor views and listen to the sound of the local wildlife. You may even see the odd owl or bird of prey. Our guests dogs love this field, during the summer months we let the grass grow longer for hide and seek, keeping a mowed path around the field to avoid wet legs from early morning dew.
Early morning and late evening we also open up the meadow next to this field, this then gives you around 4.2 acres of field for your dogs to sniff and explore before you go of visiting the local Devon area.
This whole field is a communal area where dogs can play together. If you have a nervous dog, we have a sign that you can turn to inform other guests that your dog is nervous.
Dog Park - Exclusive use secure off lead paddock
From April 2018 - We have now created a secure off lead dog paddock (D on map). This is an exclusive use area which means only you will be in the field allowing your dog(s) to be exercised without worry of other dogs. If you have a dog that cannot normally be let of the lead due to the risk of them running off and worrying sheep and other animals, then this is the perfect paddock for you. It is approx 2 acres in size and has 6 foot fence all round. This is a pay to use area. Hire periods can be half hour or hour.
Cottage Guest's Off lead dog field
This exercise field (marked C on the map) is exclusively for our cottage guests & the owners of Kipscombe.
The field is located within 10 metres of Babbling brook cottage and is the ideal field to exercise your dogs first thing in the morning, daytime or evening. It is fenced with 4 foot stock proof fence.
If you have a nervous dog or you prefer not to use our other communal field (B) then you'll be very grateful for this off lead exercise area.
Within this field you will find a picnic bench should you decide to have a picnic in there. Great views and sound of the brook from here.
Cottage guest feedback. Off lead cottage field is a stroke of genius, love sitting here watching my dogs play.
